Dorian's Wheel is a traditional Irish band from Lawrence, KS. From pulse pounding pub tunes, jigs, and reels to ethereal airs and ballads, Dorian's Wheel plays it all... and not just in dorian mode. The band is made up of: Kelly Bohling, fiddle; Chris Bohling, bodhran and vocals; and Leslie Jabara, harp, bouzouki, and vocals. Originally from Lawrence, KS, Kelly grew up listening to Thistle and Shamrock on Public Radio, which nurtured her love for all music Celtic. She started learning violin when at the age of 12 and went on to get a BM in violin performance from KU. Kelly currently has a private violin/viola studio in Lawrence, and enjoys teaching a wide range of ages and styles.
Originally from Lawrence, KS, Chris has studied percussion, piano, and voice through public school, then went on for collegiate degrees in voice (BM) and musicology (MM--still pursuing). Music has always been a part of his life since childhood, and he has performance experience in many styles (Celtic, opera, rock, and metal).
Recently from Arizona, Leslie has performed as a vocal soloist with The Phoenix Symphony ("Ainadamar" with Dawn Upshaw, "The Lord Of The Rings Symphony"). She appeared at the Arizona Renaissance Festival in the harp/comedy duo "Fiona McGregor: Celtic Harpies". Leslie has taken workshops from Gráinne Hambly (harp), Michael Cooney (uilleann pipes), and John Good (whistle, Irish flute) and holds a BM (voice, CME) from Northwestern University.
Dorian's Wheel, a Lawrence, KS based trio of musicians, is releasing their debut album Raise the Sixth, and while they don't claim to reinvent this Wheel, they certainly spin it with a deeply skilled sense of devotion to tradition. Purists will applaud the selections, which include all the toe-tapping ambience of an intimate evening at the local pub as well as the strains of the harp and fiddle which evoke images of the wind on the cliffs. An added bonus is the seamless addition of original pieces with provocative yet familiar Celtic lore as their impetus.
Husband-wife team Chris and Kelly Bohling, along with Leslie Jabara, are all impressively accomplished musicians who can and do hold their own in any musical genre, but it is obvious that this one is closest to their hearts. To the beauty and mastery of Jabara's Irish harp and contralto vocals is added the rich baritone of Chris Bohling, who also contributes an amazing instrumental versatility. Kelly Bohling completes the trio with her friendly and familiar dexterity on the fiddle and dead-on compositional skills."
Dorian's Wheel has a unique gift in that it can lift your spirits, make you want to chug a pint of ale, and dance your feet off during the course of one song. The band is so well-acclimated to its instruments that you'd really never know they were American. You would honestly swear that the band stepped right off the moors and into a pub.
"Wonderful Irish Trad! I just happened upon this group in looking for some more Irish traditional music. Although they are not Irish (unless perhaps they are Irish-American?) they are fantastic musicians and I love the few songs I've downloaded from this album. I'll be watching to see if they come out with a new one!"
